I just love walking down the aisles of a craft store and browsing through the supplies on Etsy. There are those pieces that you see and immediately like, “Wow! I gotta have that.” I also love nature and animals. I love all sorts of styles, from feminine, to glam, to earthy, to retro. So, really, whatever strikes my fancy at the moment.

I recently saw The Fantastic Mr. Fox and it was the starting point for several pieces. Of course, I had to make some cute foxes. I also made a rabbit wearing a dress that is similar to one of the lesser characters in the film. The aesthetic of that film is just about what I am going for with my art.

Today’s featured crafter is a heart attack survivor. She said, as a result of the experience, “It has made me appreciate life more and has inspired me to eat healthier, more carefully and include exercise in my routine. Also has made me appreciate living.”

I have to create and I love personalized, individualized items. Anyone can walk into a department store and buy something. I want to make things that represent the people that will own them and show off their personality as well.

Inspiration is something I don’t really believe much at all. I have references, like painters and designers but most of all, any random image on a magazine or real life can be the source of some drawings I’ve done. Anything can be pretty much inspiring to me.

We have both been creative in various forms from the time we were kids…but our collaboration started when James gifted me with another one of his amazing hand-drawn cards. This particular card featured an image of General Tom Thumb (since he knows I LOVE the circus) and I proclaimed “this would make an awesome embroidery”.

For me, buying and selling handmade is an effort to support crafters and artists like me that felt a calling to create. Art is incredibly important to me. I know that each handmade item I buy has helped to support – however little – an artist.

I love the unique, imperfect nature of handmade goods and the knowledge that somebody has lovingly dedicated their time, talent and energy into producing it just for me. The choices are endless, with much more variety than the generic options you get in the high street stores.

When I became a preschool teacher, I wanted the kids to make crafts that the parents would want to keep. I believe in the motto every preschool teacher uses: “It’s the process, not the product”. But I also didn’t want them to make something the parents would cringe at and wait until their little dumpling was asleep before the project hit the trash can.
