What got you started crafting?
In 2005, I picked up a book on soapmaking at a discount bookstore and read it while on vacation. From that point on, I was hooked. I read more books and researched the internet, found soapmaking forums and asked questions; and I've been making soap ever since.
Making soap is magic for me. When I can take something as caustic as lye and mix it with everyday oils to make something that cleans and smells good and feels good, that's pure magic.
What is your source of inspiration?
My inspiration comes from both nature and my own creative self. My soul has a passion for honoring mother earth. I work on living with the earth harmoniously, without taking more than I can give back. I'm a tree hugger, do yoga, and have an organic garden. I go on retreats to ashrams & ruins; and search in my back yard for gifts from the faeries.
What have you made recently?
I recently made a new soap I call "Hole-In-One". Living in the Augusta, Georgia area, golf is a major part of our lives, the annual Master's tournament is held here and the top two golf car manufacturers are also here. I found it appropriate this year to make a soap honoring the game of golf and Augusta. The soap looks like a golf green with a flag on it, it's really cute for the golf crowd.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I sell my products myself at local venues like markets, special county events, holistic & natural fairs. I also have my products in retail stores throughout the state of Georgia.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
The giver of a handmade gift has avoided the parking lots and long lines of the big chain stores in favor of something more meaningful. If the giver has purchased the gift, s/he feels the satisfaction of supporting an artist or crafter directly. The recipient of the handmade gift receives something that is one-of-a-kind, and made with care and attention that can be seen and touched. It is the result of skill and craftsmanship that is absent in the world of large-scale manufacturing.
