A lover of black, this Quebec native in inspired by everything around her from nature to furniture to her busy life with three kids. While she has an appreciation for the “old and antique” she isn’t driven to create anything from this era, which is readily seen in her uniquely modern crystal and beaded jewelry work.

We have two cats, one twice the size as the other, both from the same litter, and a lovely dog I got at the grocery store (she was a pup, in a cardboard box, and I just had to pick her up. There was no putting her back!). We live in the woods, where there are coyotes, bears, deer, turkeys, mountain lions, foxes (a whole den, a few yards from our driveway), etc. I saw the awesome article in this blog written about my friend and fellow grad student, Eva Champagne (Functional-Lively-Serious Play), and just wanted to be part of this community!

Being the extreme shopper that I am, I come across the same thing in every store. Everyone’s reading the same trend reports, they are all using the same consulting firm and every store seems to be going after the same customer.

Each and every piece I create is unique and original. When purchases a headband or a necklace from me, he or she will be the only person to own and wear that item. Handmade it an ideal way to express true individuality and enjoy the personal care and service that went into each work of art.

Different things inspire me. Sometimes it’s a color, sometimes a texture, sometimes a mood. I often catch myself watching other people’s knitwear and figuring out how it was made. Also I have quite many stitch libraries and traditional Estonian knitting patterns. leafing those through always gives me some impulses.

When I shop handmade, it’s usually because I’m looking for something unique. I also like the idea of supporting other artists and craftsmen in the effort to never work for the man.

My mother always got us excited about weekend craft projects when we were growing up, and my parents were very supportive of me furthering my creativity. I also began to really love playing with my mother’s and grandmother’s collections of jewelry, and pretty soon that evolved into me making my own jewelry.

Two of the best things that people have told me:

The first quote is fairly recent, while I was having a conversation about our business and about inspiration. It rang so true with me, and I share it with other creative people every chance I get.
The second quote is from my elementary school art teacher (who I got to thank a few weeks ago.) Between that philosophy and the fearlessness Mom instilled in me by encouraging me to try new things, I don’t know how you can go wrong! Never be afraid to try, and don’t be too hard on yourself if you think you’ve messed it up. It may end up being the best thing you’ve ever created.
