I absolutely love handmade things because it feels personal, it makes the item so very special and real to me. It almost feels like they made it just for you. I also like to get to know my customers on a personal level so that when I create something, they will know why I made it and the buyer will have this story to tell about the piece.

A bright and lovely distraction.

I have to mention how wonderfully lovely the online craft community is. Their encouragement and their own creativity inspire me daily.

The World Is Still Beautiful

I find inspiration in everything around me. Right now my biggest inspiration is nature. I’m living in a beautiful forest enclosed town, South Lake Tahoe, so a lot of my recent work is inspired by forestry and snow. By the beautiful Autumn surrounding me. When it comes to my fine art work, a lot of my inspiration recently has stemmed from my poetry. I’m working on a self-published poetry/photography book and each poem will have a photograph that has been inspired by it alongside.

Tell us a little about your holiday cards:

I hand drew this owl silhouette, inspired by traditional French embroidery, vintage lace and doilies from France. The design features multiple delicate woodland motifs from nature like flowers, branches, leaves and birds while incorporating abstract and geometrical shapes like hearts.

Girl with Santa Hat and Penguin

What is your favorite holiday tradition?

Gosh, its hard to pick one! For Diwali (an Indian festival) its definitely the lighting of diyas/candles. You light them at night and place them around and outside your house, it makes the whole night feel magical.

Celebrating Christmas with my husband’s family, I’ve experienced a lot of new things, and in the beginning I was very confused by stockings! Now, I love them. I love stuffing my husband’s stocking with thoughtful and surprising gifts.

How did you get started doing holiday crafts?

I enjoy the holidays, the seasonal changes and all the imagery during this time of year. It inspires me to create wintery and fun art.

How is your holiday crafting different than “regular” crafts you do?

I’m drawing more penguins, that’s for sure! I think its similar, its really the content that makes it different… characters, settings, snow everywhere!

What was your inspiration behind the “Sipping Hot Chocolate” piece?

Sipping Hot ChocolateI am often inspired by curiosity… When I drew my sipping chocolate image, I imagined myself as a little girl in my living room, tuning the world out and escaping into the snow. Oh, but I wasn’t alone… a soft and curious young bear had come to steal a sip (or two) of my cocoa!

I felt particularly happy with this image because it felt organic and captured the feeling I had inside me…

Why handmade?

I love supporting small, handmade, and local. For me, its about supporting a creative community and inspiring people to pursue something different and be happy. (more…)

nature + photography + practical = me

nature + photography + practical = me

Nature and practicality. The great outdoors inspire and enrich my soul with the beauty and majesty of it all. And practicality is my middle name – so I love to find practical ways to use things. So here the two get married together in a great partnership.

Fun Prints with Retro Flavor

I try to buy most gifts from the artist or maker as much as possible. I try to either buy locally or online directly from the maker when I can. It’s such a wonderful sub-economy, and so much more meaningful that way. Not to mention the incredible variety that is just not available in the mass market commercial world.
