Cute as a Button

email

Handmade items have more heart and more of a story. When you buy from the marketplace, everything is so generic. With handmade, many times you can customize the piece to what you like and are not restrained by trends. The chance to have a one of a kind piece makes it very appealing to buy and make handmade.

Random Facts About You?

I traveled to Costa Rica in high school. When I traveled to Costa Rica it was the first time I had been on a plane. For Christmas this year, I have asked my friends and family to donate money to charity instead of giving me presents. Even though I only live two hours away from New York City, I have only ever been there on school trips.

What got you started crafting?

I took traditional art classes in school like everyone else where you were given an assignment to draw your portrait and I was never very good at it. I needed an artistic outlet that was outside of an 8.5x11 piece of paper. My dad always told me to color outside the lines, and making bags was my way of doing that.

What is your source of inspiration?

Since the bags that are sold in our shop are upcycled from t-shirts, pants, sweatshirts, I take inspiration from the design on the bag. I love all things cute and love mixing bright colors, opposite colors, textures, and patterns. Nature is always a source of inspiration. The colors found in nature obviously look good together, so I take a lot of inspiration from that.

What have you made recently?

Recently I have started to make t-shirt necklaces. They are fun and cute and a great alternative to a traditional necklace. They are very comfy to wear too!

All of our bags are made from clothing found at thrift stores. The only new things I use are zippers, buttons, and thread and sometimes I even use zippers recycled from the clothing. The bags that I make are made special by the two buttons that are sewn on all of them. Hence the name thetwobuttons.

Where do you sell your crafts presently?

I have a shop on Etsy.com under the name thetwobuttons.

Why are handmade crafts important to you?

Handmade items have more heart and more of a story. When you buy from the marketplace, everything is so generic. With handmade, many times you can customize the piece to what you like and are not restrained by trends. The chance to have a one of a kind piece makes it very appealing to buy and make handmade.
