Gooco Goodness + Recycled Paper Stock + Imagination= Happiness!
Now, you may be saying to yourself (as I was) – what the h-e-double hockey sticks is a Gocco? Well, my friends, a Gocco is a Japanese style of printing that (without going into too much of the gory detail) basically allows you to do your own screenprinting at home. While they are compact and easy to use, be warned that there is only one company that makes the Gocco machine and all of their parts are proprietary – so (gasp) no running to Target when you run out of ink!
Julia Made
I am a proud Aussie residing in the beautiful city of Sydney Australia. Summer in Australia is AMAZING!
I'm engaged to Mr Wonderful, we've been a couple for 6 years now! Oh how lucky i am!
I have a knack of killing gold fish, even when i painstakingly look after them and worry about them. Don't worry i will not be getting anymore...
I spend way to much time on computers these days, what must it be doing to our eyes?
My most favorite food is Mexican and Margaritas. I think that's what i'll have for dinner...
What got you started crafting?
I've always been into art, starting as a small child at art classes and then at school. It was the only subject that came naturally and as a result i got excellent grades and that spurred me on to get a degree at university.
It wasn't until this year i decided to go further and start my own small business. I started by painting my own paintings for my home, i got positive comments so i went on to buy a Japanese Gocco Printer and began to sell my own cards at the local markets around Sydney, and now my new website.
What is your source of inspiration?
The name Julia Made was my late grandmother’s idea, who herself had a little knitting business called Val Made. Naturally i would carry on such a clever family tradition.
My inspiration and ideas come from the world around me, but mostly i'm fascinated with times gone past, the yesteryear and anything old fashioned; black and white American movies, patchwork quilts, old junk stores, antique everything, old books/ magazines/ prints are a gold mine and illustration/ design/ printing and making things is what makes me tick.
What have you made recently?
I make my cards nearly every day! Seriously, it's such a joy.
I will tell you how a Gooco Printer works... Firstly i make a design on my Mac Computer and print out of my home Laser Printer. I cut image to size and place on print area in my Japanese Gocco Printer. I place one Riso B6 High Mesh Screen in position (please Google Gocco Machines because not many people have heard of them) I then load up Flash Bulbs in the Gocco Lamp Head, double check every thing is lined up then press down to see the machine FLASH. I know then that the image is burnt into the High Mesh Screen and now i can place ink on burnt image and start to print on my white card stock!
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I sell my cards off my website, below, and i sell my cards on Etsy. I will eventually stock my cards, if they'll have me at card stores, bookshops and such. If you are interested in buying Julia Made products click on one of the links below...
I also sell my cards once a month at the local Markets around Sydney. The markets are a great place for little companies like mine. You can gain ideas and share them to other stall holders and they're fun!
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
Well it's the imperfection i enjoy about printing Gocco the best. Every print is different and that's what makes each card unique and special. I also feel even though i'm not Japanese that i'm keeping the old tradition of Gocco Printing alive and that makes me happy.
