Whimsical Sweet Quirky Characters

email

I recently saw The Fantastic Mr. Fox and it was the starting point for several pieces. Of course, I had to make some cute foxes. I also made a rabbit wearing a dress that is similar to one of the lesser characters in the film. The aesthetic of that film is just about what I am going for with my art.

Random Facts About You?

I collect vintage kokeshi and Made in Japan 50s bobbleheads.

I love shoes and have a hundred of them, but I mostly prefer to be barefoot.

My favorite food is macaroni and cheese.

My best friend is my miniature Schnauzer, Sebastian.

What got you started crafting?

I have always loved to make art and crafts, but what got me really serious was when one year for Christmas my mom got rid of her desk and made me an art center with everything an artist could possible hope for. I had my own space to make anything my mind could dream up. I guess I found my true forte with fiber arts, and after I discovered three dimensional needle felting in 2007 there was no looking back.

What is your source of inspiration?

I am mostly inspired by nature and animals. I love the natural world around us. I am also inspired by other artists, authors, and producers, Brian Froud, Jim Henson, Tim Burton, Roald Dahl, Mark Ryden, and some of the great illustrators on Etsy. I love Japanese amigurumi and animation as well and sometimes see a piece that just begs to be translated into felt.

What have you made recently?

I recently saw The Fantastic Mr. Fox and it was the starting point for several pieces. Of course, I had to make some cute foxes. I also made a rabbit wearing a dress that is similar to one of the lesser characters in the film. The aesthetic of that film is just about what I am going for with my art. It is cute and quirky and brings everyday animals to life with gigantic characters.

Where do you sell your crafts presently?

Online at Etsy.com and in Albuquerque at The Cellar Door Gallery and Gifts and The Yarn Store At Nob Hill. I also occasionally do arts and crafts shows locally.

Why are handmade crafts important to you?

I believe there is value in surrounding myself with things that are made from the heart by other's hands. There is a lasting value in a handmade item that you just do not get with mass produced goods. Plus, you can get exactly what you want, and I am oddly specific about what I like and dislike.
