I Love to Keep Things Simple

email

Keepin’ it simple – in craft and conversation.

Silja Erg

Random Facts About You?

I can't draw feet.
I like biology and thing molecular biology is beautiful.
If there was one thing could change about the world, I would make people have more empathy.
I hate when people talk about what they saw in their dreams.

What got you started crafting?

My mum's friends wanted to wear earrings I had made, made me wonder about what else I could do. All in all I am one of those who always made something and tried to sell stick necklaces when they were little. So I think it comes within, eternal seeking for attention I guess.

What is your source of inspiration?

Details of human and animal behaviour and stuff that I find funny about people and society. Another thing is color combinations and art supplies.

What have you made recently?

I've been making cat ornaments recently, they are meant for the Christmas tree, but I just today made one into brooch for my friend. They don't look very Christmas related, but I thought I would want to have a tree with a bunch of cat ornaments. I love cats, they are great.

Where do you sell your crafts presently?

I have an Etsy shop.

Why are handmade crafts important to you?

I think most things are handmade, I have worked in a few factories and it's all the same.
But the reason to buy handmade from a specific artisan is the quality I'm guessing. Quality is so much better and the items are meant to last.
I definitely support small business owners in their doings, but most of them dream of going big, they wouldn't fight against corporations if they were in them. I wouldn't buy anything from a person just because they have a small business and they seem alternative, but in my experience - you get treated WAY better by a small business owner and the quality is so much better.

I recently saw The Fantastic Mr. Fox and it was the starting point for several pieces. Of course, I had to make some cute foxes. I also made a rabbit wearing a dress that is similar to one of the lesser characters in the film. The aesthetic of that film is just about what I [...]

My shop is still so new. And I’m really excited about getting my name out there, letting my felted things speak for themselves. I have so many more ideas I am ready to put into design and start selling. Over time, I’ll be able to add new things. I’m sure the list will never end!

Today’s featured crafter doesn’t speak Mandarin, but sometimes he feels Belgian – despite his Italian heritage. No matter what the language or nationality, we can all agree that these hand felted crafts are completely unique!

A Heart Handmade Blog Holiday Feature What type of felting do you do? Needle felting. It is a fairly new art/craft. Originally the needles we use were designed to be used in machines to commercially make felt sheets. Some really creative and adventurous person decided to see what would happen if used manually…and with wonderful [...]

I started making reusable coffee cup cozies with swear words on them because I noticed that people tend to get sassier when they’re drinking their coffee- so I bring the cozies to where sassy people hang out.
