I can’t stand to pay full price for anything. I love second-hand, hand-me-downs, flea markets and antique shops. So, being able to reuse something and give it a new life gives me a natural high. I also love being able to support others making handmade. There is something special, unique and personal about having contact with the person that created your item.
Heather Murphy
1. I'm a homeschooling mom of three; and I love it.
2. Not counting my husband, I've had the same best friend for over 20 years. And I'm only 30.
3. The pinnacle of my theatrical career was 6th grade. I played Lucy in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown". My mom said I was type-cast.
4. I briefly volunteered as the "squeegie" girl for the girl's tennis team in high school. My friends were on the team and I had no talent, so it was the only way to hang out with them.
What got you started crafting?
I was desperate to have a crafty creative outlet and was failing at every pass. I've been knitting the same scarf for almost two years. I've started to counted cross-stitches and I've never finished. My three year old draws better than me. I can't sew...the list goes on and on. I found directions for making book purses and all I needed was a glue gun and a creative eye - BINGO! I started hunting for great books and vintage buttons. The rest is history. I love it!
What is your source of inspiration?
My love of literature, repurposing (I'm really cheap at heart...can't stand to pay full price for something) and fabulous fabric.
What have you made recently?
My mom's friend brought me a book to be converted into a purse. It was a huge doll collector's guide and I wasn't quite sure how it would look. I was able to find beautiful vintage looking fabric that added just the right touch of nostalgia. It looked beautiful.
I also have so many great books but not enough time (or money) to make them all. I launched a "Cover Collections" line on etsy. I grouped books by topic and allow people choose which cover they'd like made into a purse. This allows me to show off my selection and the individual has the opportunity to be a part of the crafting process.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I've tried two (unsuccessful) craft fairs. Word of mouth custom orders and and my etsy/facebook pages have been my primary sources of selling.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
I can't stand to pay full price for anything. I love second-hand, hand-me-downs, flea markets and antique shops. So, being able to reuse something and give it a new life gives me a natural high.
