What got you started crafting?
I was envious of those who are born with talent. They sing, they dance, they play the piano and violin. Not me. So at the ripe old age of 33 I prayed for a talent, that is, a talent other than having babies. Picked up a 25 lb bag of clay and went to town. That was it. It was more addicting than heroin.
What is your source of inspiration?
My kids of course. I love the look in someone's eyes when they pick up their plaque. And opening a kiln is better than Christmas, because it happens once or twice per month!
What have you made recently?
A customer wrote me and asked if I could fix a broken plaque she had of her firstborn child, that was several years old. I said I could try. She sent me an envelope with the broken pieces. I glued it back together like a puzzle, and recreated it better than new. It was quite a feat from literally shards of clay.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I had a storefront for several years, then moved it to my living room. I opened an etsy shop and just sold my ceramics but in 2010, I wiped it clean and revamped it to sell only my ceramic hand and footprint plaques after I worked for over a year to figure out how to do it by mail.
Why are handmade crafts important to you?
Handmade is about relationships. Creating relationships helps us dissolve the sense of isolation we have created with technology. It helps us connect and appreciate people for their talents and gives us inspiration. It gives us something to surprise us with, like wow, I didn't know you could do that! I purchase all my Christmas gifts and birthday and anniversary gifts now handmade. I love suprising people with other people's ingenuity.
