Handmade items are usually made with more love and care and it is a very special feeling knowing you own something that has had so much personal attention. I also like feeling individual; that exactly the same item simply can’t be bought by millions of others.
Helen Hobden
I like to walk around the garden looking at the flowers and talking to myself.
I have a surfboard, and every now and then I try to stand on it in the sea.
I dance in my living room.
Hug your family and tell them that you love them.
What got you started crafting?
When I was a student and couldn't afford nice clothes from proper shops, I started making my own and altering garments from jumble sales. I enjoyed wearing clothes that were one of a kind and more my own style. After having children, they asked me to make them fairy dresses which always got loads of attention. Eventually, I have decided to turn the hobby into a business and concentrate on making clothes full time.
What is your source of inspiration?
Romantic ideas of fantasy and fiction, from nature fairies to steampunk Victorian gothic to old fairytales.
What have you made recently?
With the next Pirates of the Caribbean film coming out shortly, I decided to make a collection of clothes inspired by the films, characters and legends of pirates. Lots of frills, flounces and swashbuckling style!
Some of the items are made entirely from recycled fabric, creating dresses with full, floor-length skirts 18th century style. Some are a mix of old and new materials, using some lovely blood red lace and black crushed velvet. I also recently found gorgeous organic cotton gauze fabric - it is so soft and is perfect for shipwrecked style clothing.
I hope to make pieces that are beautiful and unique and make the wearer feel happy.
Where do you sell your crafts presently?
I sell online at Etsy and my personal website.
